The Race to Net Zero Emissions

Jan 24, 2023

National Academies

AchievingĀ  net zero emission requires changes in every sector. However there has to be major changes in the US Energy sector to achieve this huge goalĀ  by 2050.

Our earth is in danger according to the latest research and science, which clearly states that the worst impact of climate change is around the globe from the past few years. ThisĀ  has become a global threat, concern and a call for action. More than 19 countries have adopted the Paris Climate Agreement, a legally binding International Treaty on climate change which aims to keep a rise in global temperature to below 2o celsius by the end of the century.

The United States of America under the Biden's Administration rejoined the Paris Climate Agreement, acknowledging the seriousness of the climate challenges and the ambitions required to keep global warming below 1.5 degrees celsius,as the USA stands in second place after China in Total Greenhouse Gas emissions.

China,USA and EU account for almost half of the Global Greenhouse Gas emissions.

In response to this the USA has set a net zero emission target. The USA and China had issued a joint statement stating their commitment to tackle the Climate Crisis.

The US government had submitted USA's long-term strategyĀ  to the UNFCCC(United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change) in November 2021,officially committing USA to achieve net zero emission by 2050.

AchievingĀ  net zero emission requires changes in every sector. However there has to be major changes in the US Energy sector to achieve this huge goalĀ  by 2050, like:

  1. Clean Energy(Electricity) Generation : Focusing on the generation of electricity from Renewable and Clean Energy sources such as wind, solar, nuclear and hydro(water) power generation combined with advances in electricity storage can provide much of the US's electricity needs with minimal CO2 emissions.

  2. Use of More Electricity Powered Transportation : One of the most common Greenhouse Gas emitters is the transportation sector which means cars, buses, trucks, trains, planes, etc which runs on fossil fuel. Switching to electric cars, trucks and different modes of less Greenhouse gas emission fuel can have a huge positive impact on achieving the Net Zero goal.

  3. Ā Removal carbon dioxide from the atmosphere :Ā  To offset emissions that are too costly or difficult to avoid, it is necessary to remove CO2 from the atmosphere and store it permanently. This can be done with technologies that directly capture CO2 from the air and trap it so it cannot re-enter the atmosphere. Plants and soils already remove CO2 from the atmosphere, and certain land management practices can increase their capacity to absorb and store carbon.Ā

  4. Use of Energy Efficient Products and Power Saving Technologies : More efficient technologies and processes that reduce energy use can also reduce emissions significantly. Also, ā€œsmartā€ technologies, which sense when energy is needed and when it is not, can help to optimize how electricity is generated and used, helping minimize waste.

FORCE an energy saving device of ENPOSS which can be installed in any facilities where electricity is in use and can efficiently reduce the loss of electricity Ā by increasing the flow of electricity andĀ  also reduce electricity utility bills and saving energy hence contributing in the Net Zero Emission goal.
