Storm Caetano Leaves 170,000 Households in France Without Power

Heavy snowfall from Storm Caetano has cut electricity supplies to about 170,000 households in France, Energy Transition Minister Agnès Pannier-Runacher said on Thursday. More than 1,400 people have been mobilized to fix the storm-damaged power network, but officials warn that the number of homes without electricity is likely to increase as the storm intensifies.

The storm landed early Thursday and is expected to continue producing snow all night, with temperatures below freezing. However, the minister indicated increased risks for black ice and advised residents to be cautious.

The French Civil Aviation Authority stated that delays at Charles de Gaulle Airport in Paris have been particularly heavy, and ordered airlines to ground 10% of flights. The country's national railway operator SNCF suspended or cut high-speed train services nationwide, citing safety concerns.

Meteo-France has issued an Orange alert, which is the second-most stringent warning level, for 56 of the 96 departments in metropolitan France, above Storm Caetano continues to batter the region with strong winds and snowfall.
