China Energy Crisis: Result of Heatwave and Droughts

Sep 30, 2022

The Guardian

To ease the energy crunch, Sichuan is firing up its coal power plants, raising concerns among environmentalists about the potential increase in greenhouse gas emissions.

China has been witnessing the worst heatwave in over 60 years with temperatures soaring above 40 degrees Celsius in several regions the past month accompanying drought that has wreaked havoc across Sichuan.

In Sichuan, a top-level energy emergency was issued to handle the provisions of power shortages. A first in provision history, Sichuan in normal times was a hub for hydroelectric power, delivering a surplus to carry on with the country's network and accounting for 30% of China's hydroelectric output.

The heat wave sparked huge demand for electricity as millions of people turned to air-con, which has led to extensive power shortages. Across affected regions and provisions were blocked out and public spaces were rationed.

This energy crisis has seen Beijing shift its political discourse and proclaim energy security as a more urgent national mission than the green energy transition. Now, the government is investing in a very new wave of coal-fired power stations to reach the demands. China’s carbon emissions rose above 11.9 billion tonnes.

To ease the energy crunch, Sichuan is firing up its coal power plants, raising concerns among environmentalists about the potential increase in greenhouse gas emissions.China became the world's largest emitter of greenhouse gas in 2006 and is now answerable for quite more than a quarter of the world's overall greenhouse gas emissions.

In such cases energy saving devices like force from ENPOSS could come in hand in saving the energy at any time of the season with proven results.
