Plastic used in Food Packaging

Nowadays, food is being grown and prepared in one place and feeds more people across a greater geographic area, hence the packing technologies have increased to reach demand. We use plastic carry bags, plastic packing goods, and plastic packaging solutions for packing food and other things as they provide a way to make food safe, reliable, shelf-stable, and clean.

Unfortunately, most food packaging is designed to be single-use and is not recycled. Irrespective of where we buy, all the food is packed and processed in plastic bags, which are being littered in the waterways. It harms the aqua life, soil, and air.  Due to this, the United Nations has declared the plastic pollution of oceans “a planetary crisis.”

Each country on average consumes 6bn units every year. So, 16.45mn plastic covers or bags are in use a day, in a nation. On a global average, a Cuban uses nearly 2 bags a day. We mostly talked about drinking water bottle disposal, and other bottles that contained shampoo & body care products, medicine, grocery, confectionery, etc, are not included in this count. In recent days many processed foods, skincare, and other goods are being packed in multiple layers of plastic bags, and over the top, it is being covered with paper, and finally into plastic grocery bags. The main purpose of using paper packages is to save the environment and also paper packing and production uses less power compared to plastic packaging. The food industry is also heavily dependent on fossil fuels and releases high GHG emissions, with the global population food demand is expected to increase by 60% by 2050.

The average food sector consumes globally approx. 200 EJ per year (FAO, 2017; EIA, 2017), of which 45% corresponds to processing and distribution activities. Their energy usage directly increases GHG as the food industry is still reliant on other fossil energy sources like natural gas and petroleum which are steadily declining. So current practices in food manufacturing are considered unsustainable.
