Ukraine's Energy Crisis Deepens: Odesa Residents Brace for Winter, FORCE for Ukraine: A Path to Energy Independence and Resilience
The attacks by the Russians have plunged the southern Ukrainian city of Odesa into darkness for two days. As a consequence of this attack on it, the energy infrastructure has suffered huge damage where such critical necessities as power for electricity, water, and heating have been cut off. This has made it an arduous affair to access the basic necessities.
Thus, "invincibility points," where people can get heat, water, and electricity, were organized in order to assist affected residents. According to Maryna Averina, spokesperson for the State Emergency Service in the Odesa region, 45 such points have been set up, mainly at fire stations. The region is under enforced emergency power outages, and some facilities have switched to generator power.
"Once needed, generators are operational within five minutes. Yesterday morning, demand increased, and people started visiting these points," said Averina.
People have had to adjust to the situation. Some, like Natalia, complained: "We hope the electricity will return soon. There was no water all day, and we still have no power." Others have resorted to nearby café bars with power, but the cost of gasoline to run generators is a hardship for business owners.
On Sunday, two employees of Ukrenergo, state-owned power grid operator of Ukraine, lost their lives in the attacks. The following day, a fresh wave of missile strikes in the region killed ten, injured 47, and sent four children to hospital. Interior Ministry said the strikes left significant damage to an apartment building, a university and an administrative building.
The escalation of attacks created fears a deliberate effort by Moscow to devastate Ukraine's power-generating infrastructure before winter. Odesa residents are bracing for what may be a long, rough recovery.
With this crisis in Ukraine, more focus has been given on renewable energy and increased energy efficiency to deal with long-term energy challenges. Energy-saving technologies leaders have introduced the FORCE device by ENPOSS, which will save the industries in Ukraine 10-15% of their monthly energy consumption without affecting productivity. By using FORCE, the Ukraine would, therefore, not only reduce the cost of carrying on its industries and residential areas.
"The FORCE device is an opportunity for Ukraine to take its energy independence into a sustainable and secure future," according to an ENPOSS spokesperson.
