Full electrification for every appliance and every building when replaced by modern electric machines not only help us meet climate goals but also are efficient and cleaner.

We see a turn in the electric revolution as billions are being invested in the manufacturing of EV’s. But it is essential to know that it takes a lot more than shifting to electric vehicles to keep global temperature below 1.5degrees Celsius and avoid climate disasters. The need is in the transformation – from fossil fuels to a clean electrified world. The first practical steps would be to electrify energy consumption i.e., petrol cars to electrical vehicles, homes using natural gases to heat pumps, and industrial processes using fossil fuels to clean electrified processes.

At present, the economy globally runs on 20% electricity while the rest is by fossil fuels. According to the Energy Transitions Commission, the integrated energy system of the future must run on 68% direct electricity. Shifting to 20% to 50-80% direct electricity by 2050, which means using renewable energy instead of fossil fuels, can help avoid global temperature increases. A similar revolution for the buildings we live and work in, and industries is needed along with a huge investment in EV’s. According to the print.in, “Rewiring America, a US-based coalition focused on electrifying everything, has estimated that 42% of all our carbon emissions come from our homes and the vehicles we drive”. Full electrification for every appliance and every building when replaced by modern electric machines not only help us meet climate goals but also are efficient and cleaner.

If we were to electrify with the existing technology for a medium-sized manufacturing facility, there would be an electricity need of 50-100% or over 3.925 Gwh per year. To boost this electrification in industry and buildings, the electricity infrastructure needs to triple in demand as well as be backed up with renewable energy. Both supply and demand must be changed. Along with the EV’s, electrical revolution must also happen in our homes and industries. It is challenging but together creates a hopeful future with cleaner air.
