Entertainment and “Chill” has become an essential part of life but have you ever wondered about the mammoth energy used to shoot, edit and watch a film? Lighting is one of the biggest energy vampires in the movie industry.

A human eye can see finite detail and lighting contrast, but cameras do not respond the same way that the human eye does if there is not enough light. Additional lighting is necessary to make the definition of a video or film’s definition of comparable quality to what the human eye sees naturally. Considerations such as location, usage of ambient light, changing conditions, shadows and natural light all play their part in affecting a shot. Thus a blockbuster film with budgets of over $70m (£53.5m) produces an average of 2,840 tonnes of CO2 which is equivalent to the amount absorbed by 3,700 acres of forest in one year. With the current exponential demand in streaming video – was responsible for producing 300m tonnes of CO2 in 2018. Hollywood produced 15m tonnes of CO2 annually – though the industry has grown considerably since then. The average production, in fact, uses enough of the fuel to fill the tanks of almost 11,478 cars. Filmmaking is going through a green revolution. They are picking up the pace for green energy and have agreed to follow the Paris Climate Agreement. Big film production giants in industry are working towards a sustainable approach for energy usage and generation by looking at renewables, avoiding unnecessary traveling and accommodation, upgrading the equipment as per requirements, and also re-use the materials.
