East African Nation Eyes Massive Hydropower Projects and ENPOSS: A Potential Key Player in Uganda's Energy Efficiency Drive

Uganda aims for financing to erect three big hydropower plants that will increase the electricity generation capacity by more than 1,600 MW to meet the increasing demand of power. The trio projects were targeted to create a significant improvement in dealing with growing energy needs in the East African country, where there is 10 % annual increase in power demand. According to Wamala Julius Namusanga, an official at the Ministry of Energy and Mineral Development.

The largest of these proposed hydropower projects is the 840 MW Ayago plant, followed by the 400 MW Kiba and the 392 MW Oriang projects. Combined, new plants would bump up the installed power capacity in Uganda to 3,678 MW, an increase that represents a full 80 percent increase from its current output. Namusanga said energy was core to the development of Uganda, adding that government wanted to commission the projects within a very short time after securing funding, starting with Kiba. The ministry of Energy has already launched its search for consultants to spearhead the Kiba process and is still discussing with potential investors and companies.

Hydroelectric power now constitutes 85% of the electricity Uganda uses, while the remaining portion comes from thermal and solar plants. Uganda commissioned its 600 MW hydropower station onto its grid recently. It is the country's largest hydropower station financed through a $1.7 billion loan repayable to China. Namusanga said that Uganda wants to join the nuclear energy sector, an ambition China's National Nuclear Corporation has agreed to back, in its quest to diversify the energy mix towards sustainable development.
