Bringing Electricity to Millions: Sierra Leone Receives Major U.S. Grant

Sierra Leone is the recipient of a $480-million five-year grant awarded by the Millennium Challenge Corporation, a U.S. government development fund, to enhance access to available and affordable electricity to 4.6 million people, the fund states. The West African country is such that about 30% of its population enjoys electricity, but below 5% of them do in rural areas.



It will fund three projects that will work to enhance coverage and reliability of the power grid but challenge its sustainability. Recently, Sierra Leone's minister of energy resigned amid an electricity crisis that lasted for weeks since it was reported that this crisis was caused by unpaid debts amounting to tens of millions of dollars owed to energy providers.
